Bill Hammack Explains the Ingenious Design of the Aluminum Beverage Can

Do you know why the soda can are cylindrical in shape instead of cuboid or spherical shape? In this video, Bill Hammack from the University of Illinois explains ingenious design of can with engineering point of view. Every year beverage companies produce 15000 cylindrical cans per second. In our busy life schedule, we do not look at can support engineering which makes it cylindrical.

Spherical cans have smallest surface area for given volume and has no corners. So pressure is uniform throughout its structure. While packaging, the spherical can uses only 74% volume while other 26% is void or empty. Cuboid uses 100% of volume but you may feel awkward to drink from a cuboid. This video is marvellous one which helps us to understand the reason of scientific cylinderical can design.
